Bay Port Sports Shorts: Thursday Football Preview, Baranczyk off to Hot Start

GIRLS GOLF: the Lady Pirates golf team recently won the 13-team Marinette Invite on August 21. Freshman Jo Baranczyk was medalist winner, while Maddy Peters and Marissa Guyette both finished in the top ten.
In the first FRCC meet of the year on August 22 at the Sheboygan Town & Country Club, Bay Port carded a 183 to take top honors as a team. Baranczyk once again was medalist winner with her 40, while Tori Grimm and Marissa Guyette both shot 46.

Freshman Jo Baranczyk was top medalist winner in two meets this week.

Football: the Pirates picked up a 62-0 Fox River Classic Conference win over Sheboygan North on August 17 at Sheboygan North High School. Bay Port led 35-0 after one quarter and 56-0 at the half.
Senior quarterback Isaac Krause tossed three first-quarter TD passes – one to Jack Plumb and two to Cordell Tinch, while Jacob Calawerts added a rushing score and Isiah Gash a punt return for a TD in the first 12 minutes of the game.
Fullback Ryan Smith added two rushing scores and Ben Giese another in quarter two, before Mars McGriff ended the scoring with just two minutes left in the third.

Defensively, the Pirates gave up just 31 yards of total offense to the Golden Raiders and amassed 307 of their own. Nathan Klaas, Call Verlanic and Logan Geissler all had fumble recoveries, while Alec Nagel had an interception.

Sheboygan South Preview: Bay Port will host Sheboygan South on August 24 – visit thepress.media for game story, video and pictures after the game… South was a loser in week one to Green Bay Notre Dame, 42-0. Last season, the Pirates scored seven first-half touchdowns and a safety in route to a 49-0 blanking of the Redwings.
GIRLS TENNIS: the Lady Pirates hosted the “Battle on the Fox” Invitational on August 14-15 and went 4-2 as a team. Bay Port got wins over Antigo (7-0), New Richmond (4-3), Waukesha South (6-1) and West De Pere (7-0), but lost to Mukwonago (2-5) and De Forest (3-4).
Mexican foreign exchange student Meylna Ramirez went 5-1 playing at No. 1 and 2 singles, while senior Rachel Ceaglske also went 5-1 bouncing back and forth between singles and doubles. Karina Verdette (5-1), Cathleen Graber (5-1) and Emily Wick (4-2) also had successful tournaments.
Bay Port also lost a FRCC dual match to Notre Dame at the Eau Claire Memorial Invite on August 21 by a score of 4-3. Ramirez won at No. 2 singles (4-6, 6-2, 6-3), while Ceaglske (6-2, 6-2) and Graber (7-5, 6-3) did the same at No. 3 and 4 respectively. The Pirates lost all three doubles matches.

BOYS SOCCER: Bay Port traveled to Xavier on August 22 for a non-conference game and came home with a 1-0 loss. Click here to read the season preview.
SOFTBALL: varsity softball coach Jenna Woepse suddenly resigned last month, leaving the team in search of a new leader.

Jenna Woepse stepped down as Bay Port softball coach last month.

Bay Port won the FRCC title with a 16-2 conference record this past spring, with Woepse being named the coach of the year.
According to Bay Port AD Brian Matz, there is no update on a new head coach at this time.
